The iPod Touch 4th generation holds a special place in Apple history. Released back in 2010, it was like having an iPhone without the phone plan—a pocket-sized multimedia device that could play music, run apps, and connect to Wi-Fi. For many people, it was their first introduction to the iOS ecosystem.
But here’s the problem: in 2025, most of the apps that made the iPod Touch fun either no longer exist on the App Store or simply won’t install because the device is stuck on an older version of iOS. Classic games, utilities, and nostalgic apps have become inaccessible… unless you jailbreak.
This guide will show you how to jailbreak an iPod Touch 4th gen and manually install old apps through sideloading, so you can bring your device back to life.
What is Jailbreaking?
Jailbreaking is the process of removing Apple’s restrictions on iOS, allowing you to:
- Install apps and tweaks not available in the App Store.
- Add repositories for extra tools and mods.
- Sideload apps (manually install IPA files from a computer).
- Customize the device beyond Apple’s limitations.
For the iPod Touch 4th gen, jailbreaking is especially useful because it lets you restore access to classic iOS games and apps that are otherwise impossible to download today.
Step 1: Prepare Your Computer
Since this is an older device, you’ll need to install iTunes 11 (or another older version compatible with the iPod Touch 4th gen). The latest versions of iTunes may not work correctly.
Download and install iTunes 11 before moving forward.
Step 2: Jailbreak the iPod Touch
- Download a program called POSIXBORN (a jailbreak tool for older iOS devices).
- Connect your iPod Touch 4th gen to your computer via USB.
- Open POSIXBORN and click the Jailbreak button.
- Wait a few minutes while the program works.
When it’s done, your iPod will restart, and you’ll see a new app installed: Cydia.
Step 3: Install Cydia Tweaks
Cydia is like a “second App Store” for jailbroken devices. It lets you download tweaks, utilities, and hacks.
To prepare your iPod for sideloading:
- Open Cydia.
- Add this repository: cydia.akemi.ai
- From the repo, install a tweak called AppSync Unified.
This tweak allows your iPod to communicate properly with your PC when sideloading IPA files.
Step 4: Get Classic Apps (IPA Files)
Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t allow older versions of apps to be downloaded directly anymore. But you can still find the installation files, called IPAs, online.
- Many websites and communities preserve these old apps.
- Just make sure you’re downloading from a trusted source to avoid malware.
Once you have your IPA files saved on your computer, you’re ready to sideload them.
Step 5: Sideload the Apps
- Download and install a program called App Manager on your PC.
- Connect your iPod to your computer.
- Open App Manager and click Install New.
- Select the IPA file you want to load.
- Wait a few seconds (or a minute for larger apps).
Once the installation finishes, the app will appear on your iPod just like any normal app.
Why This Matters
Apple has made it increasingly difficult to use older devices. Over time, support is dropped, apps are removed, and older versions are blocked. While this keeps the ecosystem secure and up to date, it also locks away a big part of tech nostalgia.
By jailbreaking and sideloading, you can:
- Play classic games like Doodle Jump, Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, and Temple Run.
- Use retro apps that defined the early iOS era.
- Turn your old iPod into a time capsule of 2010-era iOS.
It’s not just about functionality—it’s about preserving a piece of digital history.
Final Thoughts
Jailbreaking an iPod Touch 4th gen may sound intimidating, but with the right tools, it’s straightforward. By combining POSIXBORN, Cydia, AppSync Unified, and App Manager, you can unlock your device and bring back the apps you thought were lost forever.
Apple may have shut the door on older devices, but thanks to the jailbreaking community, there’s still a way to enjoy the iPod Touch for what it was meant to be: a portable library of music, games, and memories.
So, dust off that old iPod Touch, jailbreak it, and relive the glory days of iOS.

Is it possible to remove some of the stock apps using this trick? There are some apps that I would love to delete from iOS 6.
Yeah it actually is. To do it you need to download ifile from cydia then delete the files for the stock apps. Some of those apps run things in the background so it can speed up the iPod as well.
